Weekend in Jacksonville

Weekend in Jacksonville

Trip Overview

This two-day Jacksonville itinerary balances the city's underrated urban soul with its spectacular Atlantic coastline. Day one dives into the historic Riverside and Avondale neighborhoods, walkable, tree-canopied streets lined with bungalows, independent coffee roasters, excellent art museums, and craft breweries perched on the St. Johns River. Day two shifts east to Jacksonville Beach, where a sunrise pier walk, a surfing lesson at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, and a classic Florida seafood dinner remind you why this city draws travelers despite flying under the radar. The pace is moderate, enough breathing room to linger over a Bold Bean cortado or watch pelicans cruise the river. But structured enough that you'll leave feeling like you've seen Jacksonville rather than just grazed its surface. Good for anyone curious about Florida beyond Miami and Orlando.

1

Riverside Art, the St. Johns River & the 5 Points Scene

Riverside, Avondale & Downtown Jacksonville
Spend the morning at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens on the riverbank, then wander Avondale's independent shops before an afternoon exploring the 5 Points neighborhood's murals, coffee culture, and craft brewery scene.
Morning
Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
The Cummer is Jacksonville's crown jewel, an excellent collection of 5,000 works spanning ancient to contemporary, housed in a 1961 building on the St. Johns River. The formal English and Italian gardens stretching to the waterfront are alone worth the admission. Arrive early when the light hits the river and the gardens are uncrowded. The European Old Masters and American Impressionist galleries are the standouts.
2-2.5 hours $15 adults, free on Tuesdays 4-9pm
No booking required. Check their website for temporary exhibition schedules, special shows occasionally require timed entry
Lunch
Biscottis in Avondale
American bistro with Italian influences, excellent salads, house-made pasta, and one of Jacksonville's best brunch menus
Afternoon
5 Points Neighborhood Walk & Intuition Ale Works
The 5 Points intersection in Riverside is Jacksonville's most walkable urban quarter. Spend an hour exploring the independent boutiques, record stores, and the striking painted murals along Park Street. Cap the afternoon at Intuition Ale Works, a local institution with an enormous taproom, outdoor riverside beer garden, and flagship King Street Stout on nitro. Bold Bean Coffee on Riverside Avenue is the best third-wave roaster in the city, worth a stop beforehand.
3 hours $15-25 (coffee + 2-3 craft beers)
Evening
Dinner in Riverside followed by a St. Johns River sunset
Dinner at The Fish Company on King Street for Florida coastal fare, the pan-seared grouper and smoked fish dip are local staples. Afterward, walk five minutes to the Riverside waterfront and watch the sun drop behind the Main Street Bridge, one of Jacksonville's most photogenic city views. The Blind Rabbit speakeasy on Lomax Street is good for a nightcap, no sign, just a nondescript door and outstanding craft cocktails.

Where to Stay Tonight

Downtown Jacksonville or Riverside (The Marriott Jacksonville Downtown or one of the boutique hotels along the riverwalk puts you walking distance from both the evening dining and tomorrow's easy drive to the beaches)

Staying downtown or in Riverside means you're central for Day 1's walking itinerary and have a straight 20-minute drive east on Beach Boulevard to reach Jacksonville Beach for Day 2

The Cummer is free every Tuesday evening from 4-9pm, if your trip lands mid-week, this is the single best way to stretch your Jacksonville travel budget. On weekends, arrive at opening (10am) to have the river gardens nearly to yourself.
Day 1 Budget: $160-200 (museum $15, lunch $20-28, coffee + beers $20, dinner $45-60, hotel $100-150, transport $15-20)
2

Sunrise Pier, Surf & Coastal Seafood

Jacksonville Beach, Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park & Atlantic Beach
An early start at the Jacksonville Beach Pier for sunrise, a morning surfing lesson or nature ride through Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, then an afternoon on the sand before a final dinner at one of Florida's best casual seafood spots.
Morning
Jacksonville Beach Pier & Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park
Arrive at the Jacksonville Beach Pier by 7am for sunrise, the 1,200-foot pier stretches over the Atlantic and the light at dawn is exceptional. Watch pelicans dive and early surfers catch their first sets. By 9am, drive four miles north to Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, a 450-acre city park with 20 miles of mountain bike trails threading through maritime forest, a freshwater lake, and direct beach access. Rent a bike at the park entrance or book a surf lesson through Aqua East Surf Shop right outside.
3-4 hours Pier is free; Hanna Park entry $5/vehicle; surf lesson $65-85; bike rental $15-20/hour
Book surf lessons 48 hours ahead through Aqua East Surf Shop, weekend spots fill quickly, October through April when Jacksonville weather is at its most cooperative for beginners
Lunch
Safe Harbor Seafood Market & Restaurant on Mayport Road
No-frills Florida seafood, shrimp straight off the boats, fried flounder baskets, and stone crab claws in season. Order at the counter, eat at a picnic table. This is the real Jacksonville food culture, not the tourist-facing version.
Afternoon
Beach time at Jacksonville Beach & Neptune Beach
The stretch between Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach is one of Florida's most accessible and least overcrowded Atlantic shores. Find a spot near the Neptune Beach town center where the crowds thin out. The water is warm enough for swimming May through October. Outside those months, it's still excellent for walking, shell-hunting, and watching dolphins work the nearshore break. Atlantic Beach's Main Street has excellent independent shops if you want shade.
2-3 hours $0-10 (beach parking varies by lot)
Evening
Sunset dinner at Clark's Fish Camp
Clark's Fish Camp on Julington Creek is the classic Jacksonville restaurants experience, an old bait shack converted into a labyrinthine waterfront dining room serving over 80 different proteins including alligator, kangaroo, and ostrich alongside pristine local seafood. Order the fried shrimp or the catfish and sit on the creek-side deck for the last light. It's a 25-minute drive south of the beach but absolutely worth it, this is the kind of place that doesn't exist anywhere else.

Where to Stay Tonight

Jacksonville Beach or Atlantic Beach (The One Ocean Resort & Spa in Atlantic Beach is the area's most refined beachfront property. Budget travelers do well at the Casa Marina Hotel, a historic 1925 property directly on the Jacksonville beach)

Staying beachside on night two lets you walk to the pier at sunrise without driving, and puts you close to the Atlantic Beach restaurant scene for the evening

Jacksonville Beach parking fills by 10am on summer weekends. Use the paid lot at 1st Street North, it's two blocks from the pier and usually has space when the beachfront lots are full. In cooler months, the beaches are practically empty even on weekends, which is when Jacksonville beach visitors get the full value of this coastline.
Day 2 Budget: $150-220 (park entry + surf lesson or bike rental $70-90, lunch $18-25, beach parking $5-10, dinner at Clark's $35-50, hotel $100-180, transport $15-20)

Practical Information

Everything you need to know before you go

Getting Around
A rental car is strongly recommended for this Jacksonville itinerary, the city is large and public transit is limited. Rental rates from Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) run $45-75/day. Uber and Lyft are reliable for the Riverside/Downtown evening when you'd rather not drive after craft beers. But the 20-mile run from downtown to Jacksonville Beach makes rideshare expensive for the full day. Park free in Riverside near the Cummer (street parking on Riverside Avenue) and use paid lots at the beach ($5-10/day).
Book Ahead
Book your hotel at least 2-3 weeks out for weekend stays, Jacksonville hotels book quickly for home Jaguars games (September-January). Reserve surf lessons 48 hours ahead. Clark's Fish Camp does not take reservations. Arrive before 6:30pm or expect a 30-45 minute wait on weekends.
Packing Essentials
Reef-safe sunscreen (Florida law near protected waters), water shoes for Hanna Park trails, a light jacket for evenings October-March, a reusable water bottle, and a tote bag for Avondale shopping
Total Budget
$310-420 for two days (excluding flights and hotel, which add $200-350 depending on season and booking timing)

Customize Your Trip

Adapt this itinerary to your travel style

Budget Version
Visit the Cummer on a Tuesday evening (free admission), swap Biscottis for European Street Cafe's legendary deli sandwiches at half the price, pack your own beach snacks instead of restaurant lunch, and replace Clark's with Safe Harbor for both meals. Free things to do in Jacksonville FL abound, the Riverside murals, Hemming Park farmers market (Saturday mornings), and all public beaches are zero cost. Total daily budget drops to $60-80.
Luxury Upgrade
Book a suite at One Ocean Resort & Spa in Atlantic Beach for direct oceanfront access. Add a private charter fishing trip out of Mayport Marina ($400-600 half-day for the boat). Upgrade dinner at Clark's to a private chef experience at Rue Saint-Marc in San Marco for French fine dining with a Jacksonville culinary pedigree. Budget $400-600 per day for this version.
Family-Friendly
Kids love Jacksonville FL for several reasons: the Museum of Science & History (MOSH) in Downtown has hands-on exhibits and a planetarium good for ages 6-14; Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park has a freshwater lake with calm swimming and paddleboat rentals safer than ocean surf. And the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens makes an excellent morning substitute for Day 1. Adventure Landing on Beach Boulevard has mini golf and go-karts for rainy afternoon backup.
